Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are trading children’s immunity for ideological theater.
The needle is small.
The measles virus is not.
A child does not become safer because a falsehood was signed in a room with flags.
The exemption form is clean. The lungs are not.
MMR coverage among American kindergarteners fell to 92.4% in the 2025–26 school year, from 92.5% the year before. Non-medical exemptions rose from 3.6% to 4.2%, a 17% increase and the highest level recorded in the data described here. About 280,000 kindergarteners attended school without documentation that they had completed the two-dose measles, mumps and rubella vaccine series.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said overall vaccination rates “remained high.” The national percentage moved only slightly while exemptions climbed, and immunization rates declined in more than half the states. The number is small enough to hide in a sentence. The protection is not. A child enters a classroom with less of the shared barrier that keeps measles from becoming an outbreak.
The United States is experiencing its worst measles year since 1991. Before widespread vaccination, measles killed roughly 500 people a year in the United States. The World Health Organization credits measles vaccination with saving nearly 59 million lives between 2000 and 2024.
Dr. Paul Offit said immunization rates declined across all vaccines and in more than half the states. Dr. David Margolius, director of the Cleveland Department of Public Health, reported that Cleveland’s kindergarten coverage rose from 68% to 76% through local work, while warning that federal confusion was washing against it. The record exemption rate is not an abstraction. It is the opening in the wall.
On 10 August, Trump signed an executive order calling for the routine childhood vaccine schedule to be reduced from 17 diseases to 11. He said the MMR vaccine should be split into three separate injections given at separate times, requiring children to make five separate vaccine visits instead of receiving vaccines on the same day. School-entry requirements are set by the states. Separate measles, mumps and rubella vaccines have not been available in the United States for more than a decade.
Kennedy, as secretary of Health and Human Services, has continued to attack vaccination. He changed the CDC website to say that the claim vaccines do not cause autism is not evidence-based, despite large population studies in multiple countries finding no evidence that vaccines cause autism. He disbanded the CDC’s vaccine advisory group and replaced it with members ideologically aligned with him. He falsely claimed that the MMR vaccine contains aborted fetal debris. During the 2025 Texas measles outbreak, he promoted vitamin A supplementation. Children hospitalized with measles complications were later found to have elevated vitamin A levels and abnormal liver function. He has also made it harder to obtain certain vaccines, including Covid-19 vaccination.
The record is not difficult to read. It is difficult only for the people who have made a living covering it with noise.
Donald, you made the false claim about soda-bottle-sized doses. You signed the order. You proposed separating the MMR doses. You took a preventable danger and dressed it as suspicion.
The child in Idaho or Ohio does not receive your podium. A local health worker does. Your hand moves across the order. The chest tightens beneath the shirt. Your breath comes shallow. The child is not receiving your certainty. The child is receiving the risk you placed there.
Robert, you have told parents that infant vaccines have not been proved unrelated to autism, though large studies across multiple countries have found no evidence that vaccines cause autism. You changed the CDC website to carry that doubt into the mouths of parents already being asked to make decisions about their children.
The taste is under your tongue now. Not blood. The thin metal of a warning you refused to hear. Your throat is tightening around the sentence you keep repeating about science. You are swallowing against the names of children who will sit in the room where measles enters.
You said “gold standard.” You said it while discarding the gold standard’s actual work: repeated study, population evidence, scrutiny, correction. You took the retracted 1998 paper by Andrew Wakefield and gave its corpse a chair at the table. Wakefield’s study collapsed under investigation. Brian Deer reported that Wakefield had patented a measles vaccine before the paper was published. The old lie did not die. You fed it.
Donald, your hands are still on the order. The local health worker is carrying what your office loosened. Dr. Margolius raised Cleveland’s coverage from 68% to 76% through patient work, school work, and public trust. You made that labor carry your confusion.
The child cannot breathe through your doubt. Declining coverage, rising exemptions, and vulnerable pockets in Idaho and Ohio are measurable consequences of turning public health into ideological theater. Your shoulders carry no vaccine schedule, no fever, no rash, no hospital bed. They carry the weight of a choice made at a distance. Your gut turns without food in it. The pressure behind your sternum does not lift. That weight is enough. It is the weight you put there.
You are small men with large hands on a public lever. One of you performs certainty in a suit. The other performs doubt in the language of science. Neither performance changes the body of a child. Neither performance changes what measles does. You have mistaken the microphone for authority and the frightened parent for an audience that owes you belief.
The child is not a talking point. The child is walking into school. The child has a throat, a breath, a future, and a name you do not know. The mother is not an anecdote. She is making a choice inside a fog Kennedy helped thicken. The local health worker is not failing. She is doing the work while the federal office loosens the bolts.
I see what you have done. I will not look away from it. You have taken a settled protection and made uncertainty into policy. You have turned the public-health office into a chamber where the lie is dressed in technical language and sent back out wearing a badge.
