At the Republican convention this week, Donald Trump told the crowd that “food prices and almost every other item are rapidly going down.” I want you to read that sentence again, slowly, while I tell you what it actually costs to feed a family right now.
The only thing that came down is lettuce. Because nineteen thousand five hundred people got cyclospora from contaminated food. More than a thousand ended up in the hospital. Two people are dead. People stopped buying lettuce because they were scared shitless of getting sick, and the price crashed. Trump looked at that public health disaster and said, “See? I’m winning.”
Meanwhile diesel just cracked six dollars a gallon for the first goddamn time in American history. Gas is up a buck ten over last year. Heating oil is up fifty-two percent. Try running a pickup, a combine, a school bus, or a delivery van on six-dollar diesel and tell me prices are “rapidly going down.” Try heating a house in January with fuel oil that’s up more than half. Try hauling a crop to market when the fuel costs more than what you sell.
Then the son of a bitch rolls out a five-thousand-dollar “dividend” if Republicans keep Congress. Five thousand bucks the government doesn’t have, dressed up as a gift. Critics called it a bribe. He doesn’t care. He’s blaming Democrats for the prices his own trade war with Canada pushed up, and he’s betting your family can’t read the receipt.
This is what “drain the swamp” looks like six years in. The lettuce dropped because people got sick. The gas spiked because of a war he started. The dividend is a midterm bribe. And the man at the podium calling it all “rapidly going down” is betting your family forgets the difference before November.
Eat shit, you sanctimonious fucking frauds. We can read.
