They sold the ceasefire like it was the ending. Here is the receipt, and it is goddamn obscene.
This summer the World Food Programme fed about 1.6 million people in Gaza — three-quarters of the population. As of this month it is 1.1 million. Funding is down by more than half from last year. Families that got two ration boxes now get one. Community kitchens that served hot meals every day now serve every other day. The WFP needs more than £300 million over the next six months just to hold a line it is already losing.
I have done that math in a checkout line with my own kid in the seat. I know what a short pot looks like at the end of the week. What I have never had to do is send a child to bed hungry because a pledge got left in a drawer.
Because that is what this is. A Trump-brokered ceasefire came into force more than a year ago. The reconstruction it promised? Never started — not one project broke ground. For three years the main driver of hunger has been restrictions on aid shipments, food turned back at the gate while families starved inside. About 80% of Gaza’s population is unemployed. The farmland sits under Israeli military occupation. The greenhouses and irrigation are rubble. The Israeli navy bars the fishing boats off the coast. The people told the WFP plain what they want: not another queue, a chance to feed their own families. They cannot, because the thing they were promised was never built.
Two-thirds of the population is in crisis-level food insecurity. Two hundred thousand people are one step from famine. One in eight children is chronically malnourished or stunted, and Unicef says the damage may be permanent. A kid’s bones get shorter for good, and the ribbon stays on the podium.
Eat shit. You knew exactly what you promised. You let it rot while children paid the damn tab.
