Becky Drury, a 54-year-old teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, said she went to see what was happening outside a special-education classroom on 15 October, then spotted Griffin J John II and tried to shut the door. John shot her before she could help the children, and Drury said her injuries left her unable to stand, defend herself or protect anyone. The attack killed three students and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert before a father of two other children at the school fatally shot John; a linked item in the BBC News report said the armed father shot the attacker "multiple times."

New details are emerging about Kaylub Giamanco, the 36-year-old carpenter who fatally shot the 16-year-old attacker at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, last week. According to a September 2018 Facebook post reviewed by The Guardian, Giamanco wrote that he had gone "shooting with a group of guys who served in combat together in Iraq," an activity the newspaper characterized as "military shooting drills." It is not clear from the post whether the activity constituted a formal training exercise, and neither Bend police nor Giamanco and his family have drawn a connection between the 2018 episode and last week's attack.
