Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware was briefly hospitalized Sunday after a multi-car crash in Lewes, his office said.

Coons, a Democrat, was a passenger in a vehicle that was struck by a driver who, his office said, “experienced medical injuries.” That driver hit several vehicles during the incident, according to a statement from Coons’ office.

The senator was transported to Beebe Hospital in Lewes and treated for minor injuries. He is now home and expected to make a full and swift recovery, his office said.

“Senator Coons is deeply grateful to the first responders for their prompt and professional response, including the Lewes Police Department, Lewes and Rehoboth Fire Departments, and Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, as well as the capable doctors and nurses at Beebe Hospital, where he received excellent care,” the statement read.

According to his office, Coons “feels relieved and blessed that by all accounts no one was seriously injured during the crash.”

The crash occurred on Savannah Road in Lewes, according to the Delaware News Journal.

Coons is Delaware’s senior senator, first elected to the post in 2010. He serves as vice chairman of the Senate Ethics Committee and sits on the appropriations, foreign relations, judiciary, and small business and entrepreneurship committees.
