Alphabet seeks approval for 64 million mosquito releases in two states
About 600,000 male mosquitoes are being released across the Washington DC area this summer in a biological pest-control effort that represents a new commercial application of the Wolbachia technique. The mosquitoes carry Wolbachia, a naturally occurring bacterium that prevents any eggs produced after mating from hatching.
Only male mosquitoes are released in the program. Male mosquitoes do not feed on human blood, meaning the released insects pose no biting risk to residents. The infected males mate with wild female mosquitoes, preventing their offspring from hatching and gradually suppressing local populations over time.
Bee Safe Mosquito Control, the company behind the Washington DC-area releases, is the first business in the United States to offer this form of pest control directly to residents. Previously, the method had been used only by local government mosquito control districts, public health agencies, or research partnerships.
The technique is drawing broader commercial interest. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is seeking regulatory approval to release up to 64 million Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes in California and Florida. If approved, the program would represent a larger-scale application of biological mosquito control in the United States.
The growing adoption of Wolbachia-based methods comes as climate change creates more favorable conditions for mosquitoes to survive and reproduce across wider areas. Warmer temperatures and shifting precipitation patterns have extended mosquito breeding seasons and expanded their geographic range, heightening public health concerns about mosquito-borne diseases.
