Storm passing north of islands through Tuesday
Fausto weakened from a hurricane to a tropical storm Monday as it approached the Hawaiian Islands, according to forecasters, who warned the state to expect “significant surf” along east-facing shores through Tuesday.
The storm was located about 415 miles east-northeast of Hilo, Hawaii, and had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, the National Hurricane Center said in its 5 p.m. HST update. Fausto was moving west-northwest at 16 mph.
No coastal watches or warnings were in effect, the NHC said. The center said Fausto’s forecast track would take it north of the Hawaiian Islands during the next few days.
