Divers recover woman, 27, and infant girl from the harbor
A woman and a 5-month-old girl died Saturday night after a boat capsized in New York Harbor near Liberty Island, police said.
The boat overturned around 10:25 p.m. near Liberty Island, the island that is home to the Statue of Liberty, according to police.
Twelve people were rescued from the water before police arrived, officers said.
Police divers later located the 27-year-old woman and the 5-month-old girl in the water, police said. Both were taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Police said Sunday that the victims’ identities had not been released pending notification of their families.
No arrests have been made, police said, and the investigation continues.
