Shooting of 38-year-old Black man drew days of protests in Madison
Investigators on Monday released the name of the Madison police officer who shot and killed 38-year-old Corey Ruiz in July: Kiel Baitinger-Peterson, a white officer with nearly 11 years’ experience in law enforcement.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation said in a statement that Baitinger-Peterson fired the shots that killed Ruiz on July 22. Police said Baitinger-Peterson was one of four officers who surrounded Ruiz, who was on a bike, in response to calls about someone checking out parked cars and an alleged burglary attempt.
The shooting, captured on video, sparked days of protest that put Wisconsin’s capital city on edge.
The shooting also drew calls from the Black community for Madison to address racial justice issues.
