Venture Global says expanded terminal would be North America’s largest LNG export site
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has placed a multi-billion-dollar expansion of the Plaquemines LNG export terminal into a fast-tracked permitting track, invoking a “national energy emergency” President Donald Trump declared last year.
The terminal sits on the Mississippi River between Myrtle Grove and Port Sulphur, near New Orleans, and has been in operation for less than two years. Under the proposed expansion, the facility’s footprint would grow from nearly 590 acres to about 1,220 acres.
The Army Corps cut the standard public comment period from 30 days to 10 days, ending July 2, and is expected to move quickly on a final approval. The expanded footprint would make the terminal the largest LNG export terminal in North America, according to Venture Global, the Virginia-based company that owns it.
The emergency permitting process is described as shortening environmental review and potentially weakening protections for the surrounding wetlands and waterways. The terminal sits on the Mississippi River between Myrtle Grove and Port Sulphur, near New Orleans.
