Driver faces vehicular homicide charges in fatal Hampton crash
A car struck 11 Milligan University cyclists on a Wednesday morning training ride in Hampton, Tennessee, killing two riders and injuring seven others, state officials said.
The university, a private Christian school with just over 1,200 students, said 11 of its cyclists had been out together on the morning ride when they were struck by a driver. The collision occurred in Hampton, about 11 miles from the campus in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, according to the university.
University President Stephen Waers identified the two students who died as sophomores Haylan Engdahl, of Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, and Brayden Rogers, of Huntsville, Alabama. The remaining student-athletes were transported to the nearby Johnson City Medical Center, Waers said.
The county’s district attorney, Steve Finney, said a 69-year-old man from North Carolina had been arrested and faced two counts of reckless vehicular homicide and five counts of aggravated assault by vehicle with recklessness.
Hampton lies in northeastern Tennessee, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The cyclists were on a morning training ride at the time of the crash, the university said.
