Take-Two CEO calls GTA VI preorders ‘unprecedented and astonishing’
The 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart, Georgia, is offering soldiers four extra days off timed around the Nov. 19 release of Grand Theft Auto VI if they reenlist, the installation said.
The bonus is designed to give troops free time to play the game, in which players commit carjackings, battle police in shootouts and attempt audacious heists. The Nov. 19 release is expected to be one of the year’s biggest entertainment events, and game publisher Take-Two Interactive has not released preorder sales figures.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently called preorders “unprecedented and astonishing.”
Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, a Fort Stewart spokesperson, said a career counselor with the engineer battalion hatched the idea with battalion commanders. The perk ties a retention incentive to the game’s release, in part to remind soldiers of their approaching reenlistment dates.
Commanders of the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion believe free time to indulge in the latest entry in the Grand Theft Auto series will sway some soldiers to extend their military commitments.
