Arizona sees steepest drop as state agencies struggle to keep up
The roughly 13% decline in SNAP enrollment over the past year is far steeper than the government estimated.
SNAP is the largest federally funded food aid program in the United States. The work requirements and other changes stem from the legislation Trump has called his “big beautiful bill.”
The people who lost coverage include those who do not meet the program’s participation requirements under the new rules. According to advocates, the drop also captures some people who remain eligible for SNAP but were removed because they missed administrative deadlines or did not have the necessary documentation on hand. It is too early to determine exactly how many fall into each category, the AP reported.
Arizona experienced the steepest enrollment decline in the country, a drop the AP attributed in part to capacity strain on the state agencies that administer the program there.
