Nepal asks India and China to help rescue efforts
The flash floods swept through parts of Nepal on Wednesday after an avalanche of ice and rock gave way, officials said. Hundreds of people were reported missing, and at least eight were killed.
The Bhotekoshi River flooded around 9 a.m. Wednesday, destroying several villages along with roads and hydropower projects, according to officials. The Nepali government issued warnings to residents of several districts and asked them to stay away from the banks of the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli, and Narayani rivers.
Among those reported missing were 384 tourists, including 291 from countries including India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Malaysia, officials said.
“We have asked both India and China to help us with the rescue efforts,” Sasmit Pokharel, a spokesperson for the Nepali government, said.
