Governor Spanberger monitoring as students reunite with families at church
Police in Waynesboro, Virginia, evacuated students, teachers and staff from Westwood Elementary School on Wednesday morning after an unspecified emergency, the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The Sheriff’s Office statement said everyone was safely evacuated. It did not specify the type of emergency, and a Waynesboro police dispatcher told the Associated Press no further details were available Wednesday morning.
Video from local media outlets showed several emergency vehicles parked outside the school building.
Waynesboro assistant schools superintendent Ryan Barber said students and their families were being reunited at a church.
Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger said she was monitoring the incident. “My heart is with these young students, their parents and families, and the teachers and staff at the school,” Spanberger said in a statement. “Thank you to the first responders who are assisting at the scene.”
Waynesboro is located about 96 miles (155 kilometers) northwest of Richmond.
