June decision on coordinated party spending preceded this ruling
The Supreme Court on Friday granted an emergency appeal from Republican campaign committees, halting for now a lower-court ruling that had favored Democratic candidates who argued cheaper broadcast TV ads should be limited to candidates rather than the political parties themselves.
The order lifted a legal roadblock in the dispute over cheaper broadcast TV ad rates. Democratic candidates had argued in lower courts that the more affordable rates should not be extended to the parties.
The Trump administration supported the emergency appeal from GOP campaign arms.
The decision comes weeks after a June Supreme Court ruling that removed limits on parties spending money in coordination with candidates. According to AP, that earlier ruling was seen as favoring the national Republican Party, and the wire reported the national party holds a sizable cash advantage that access to cheaper ad rates could amplify.
The ad-rate case is the latest election-related appeal to reach the high court ahead of the November midterm elections.
