Postal Service timeline narrows ahead of midterm elections
The Supreme Court on Monday allowed President Donald Trump’s executive order restricting mail-in voting to move forward. How much of the order the administration could carry out before the midterm elections remained unclear.
The U.S. Postal Service detailed last week how it would implement the order. With some states set to begin sending mail ballots to voters in just a few weeks, the Postal Service faces a narrow window to impose major changes before Election Day.
The court’s decision appears to leave room for additional court challenges that could further slow the order.
Trump has repeatedly criticized mail-in voting, claiming the practice breeds fraud despite strong evidence to the contrary and despite his own use of the voting method.
The Justice Department had filed an emergency appeal asking the high court to allow work on implementing the changes to proceed before the midterms.
The mail-voting case could be one of multiple voting-related challenges now before the justices.
