Witnesses say masked in-laws took turns in fatal shooting
Court records cited in local media reports show that New York Times engineer Jonathan McKinsey and his wife had been engaged in a legal battle over child custody and allegations of domestic and child abuse before he was fatally shot at a suburban Bay Area park in Dublin, California, on Sunday, the Guardian reported. Dublin police have not indicated a motive for the killing.
Witnesses told CBS News that the two suspects, identified by police as McKinsey’s in-laws Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, each wore masks and took turns firing at the victim. The pair were arrested on suspicion of murder shortly after the shooting, the Guardian reported.
The shooting occurred in broad daylight at a park in Dublin, a small city about 35 miles east of San Francisco, according to the Guardian. A Dublin police officer found McKinsey, 40, lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds, the Guardian reported, citing a press release from the city of Dublin. Around the time the officer discovered him, 911 calls began pouring in from witnesses reporting the shooting. McKinsey was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Sunday press release from the city of Dublin.
Witnesses told police that the suspected shooters were still in the area after the attack, the Guardian reported. McKinsey had served as head of engineering for the New York Times games department for nearly four years, according to his LinkedIn page as cited by the Guardian. An arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, as cited by the Guardian.
The city of Dublin recorded one homicide per year between 2023 and 2025, according to city crime data cited by the Guardian. Reported domestic violence incidents in the city rose from 121 in 2024 to 131 in 2025, according to the same data.
