Inquirer, citing law enforcement sources, identifies suspect as Eric Lewis
A Philadelphia police officer was fatally shot and a second officer was wounded early Saturday in West Philadelphia after officers responded to a report of a man with a gun, authorities said.
Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel identified the officer who was killed as Shane Seiber, 40, a 10-year veteran of the Philadelphia police department. Seiber and the wounded officer were transported to Penn Presbyterian medical center, where the surviving officer underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition, Bethel said.
Bethel also said a suspect was in custody. The Philadelphia Inquirer, citing law enforcement sources, identified that suspect as Eric Lewis and reported that Lewis, 35, was employed by Philadelphia’s municipal water department.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said he ordered flags to fly at half-mast for Seiber, who is survived by his wife and two children — a boy, age seven, and a girl, age three.
Seiber was at least the 376th Philadelphia police department officer to die in the line of duty since 1851, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page, which honors U.S. law enforcement personnel who died while on the job. He was the 129th of those officers to die from gunfire, the memorial page said.
