Qualifying seasonal employees receive health coverage on their first day

Amazon plans to hire more than 300,000 people across its U.S. operations for the holiday season. The company said it will recruit for seasonal, part-time and full-time roles at its core operations nationwide, with openings scheduled to be posted each week from October through December.

The announcement came as employers positioned to increase staffing for holiday demand. Amazon said the hiring push would add workers to its core U.S. operations as companies prepared for the seasonal increase in business.

Amazon said seasonal employees earn an average of $20 an hour. The company set a different pay structure for full-time operations employees, who start at a minimum of $20 an hour and average nearly $24 an hour before benefits.

Seasonal employees also have access to a range of benefits, according to Amazon. Seasonal workers who put in at least 30 hours a week will be offered healthcare coverage on their first day, with plan options starting at $5 a week and carrying $5 copays.

The campaign includes more than seasonal positions. Amazon is also seeking part-time and full-time workers and said seasonal employees have an opportunity to transition into full-time roles.

United Parcel Service said earlier in October that it aimed to hire 100,000 seasonal employees across hundreds of locations around the country. That announcement also came as the company prepared for holiday-season demand.

On the announced figures, Amazon’s overall hiring target exceeds United Parcel Service’s seasonal goal. The totals are not directly comparable because Amazon’s figure covers seasonal, part-time and full-time positions, while the parcel carrier described a seasonal target.
