Cause of the Sunset Park blaze remains unknown as marshals investigate
Six people died and seven others were injured early Thursday in a fire that tore through a two-story row frame building in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood, the New York City fire department said. The department said four people died at the scene, and two people with critical injuries were taken to a hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. Three firefighters were among those injured.
The department reported heavy fire at the row frame building at 1:40 a.m. More than 200 first responders responded to the fire in the neighborhood, and it was brought under control in about three hours.
Four people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the department said. Three firefighters also sustained minor injuries, according to the department.
The department said no names or ages of the victims have been released.
Fire marshals were investigating. The department said a lithium-ion battery was found at the scene, but it was unknown whether the battery was related to the cause of the fire.
The department confirmed the toll — six deaths, seven injuries and a fire brought under control after about three hours — but it had not established the cause of the fire or the identities of the victims, and fire marshals continued their investigation.
