The fossil-fuel industry is heating Europe for profit.
I wrote the first ice-out date in my notebook twelve years ago, standing on the bank at Lake Petenwell with a thermos beside me and the same question I still have now: how many times can a place change before we stop calling the change unusual? The lake is not Western Europe. Adams County is not Spain, France, or Italy. But weather does not respect county lines.
I have watched the weather move across my own forty acres. The ice leaves Petenwell earlier than it did when I started keeping track. The rut comes at the wrong time. Mosquitoes show up before the shop doors have been open long enough to warm the concrete. The syrup season is harder to predict. None of that is a theory about a distant planet. It is a change in the place where I live.
Now Western Europe has set another heat record.
Copernicus, the European climate agency, reports that Western Europe’s average temperature for June and July in 2026 surpassed the previous record set in 2022. The heat began in May. It has fed major wildfires, prolonged drought, new national temperature records, and thousands of projected heat-related deaths.
That number matters. The pattern matters more. One hot afternoon can be weather. A record-setting June and July after a heat wave that began in May is climate arriving as a season.
The record-early El Niño already intensifying across the Pacific is part of the story, but it is not the whole story. The rising odds of a historic-strength El Niño show a natural cycle moving heat through the Pacific and changing temperatures around the world. Climate statistics put 2026 so far behind 2024 and 2025, making it the third-hottest year on record at this point. Scientists say the combination of human-caused warming and a strong El Niño could push 2026 past 2024 as the hottest year ever recorded, or bring it close.
El Niño is natural. It is not a permission slip for the fossil-fuel economy.
A warmer baseline makes every natural variation more dangerous. The loaded dice do not stop being loaded because the next roll came from a cycle in the Pacific. The extra heat is the loaded trailer. El Niño is the hill.
The world has always had heat waves. The world has not always had this much stored heat.
That distinction matters because the fossil-fuel industry has spent decades selling weather as though it were the whole explanation. A hot year becomes natural variation. A cool week becomes proof that warming stopped. A wildfire becomes a land-management failure. A drought becomes bad luck. Each statement contains a piece of truth and leaves out the piece that assigns responsibility.
The Wisconsin Initiative on Climate Change Impacts reports that Wisconsin has warmed about 3 degrees Fahrenheit since 1950 and that annual precipitation has increased about 17 percent. The decade from 2010 through 2019 was the state’s wettest on record. Winters in northwestern Wisconsin have warmed by 4 to 6 degrees.
Those figures do not tell me what every August will bring to Adams County. They tell me the operating conditions have changed. A warmer world does not mean every day is warmer or every field is dry. It means the old seasonal bargain is breaking apart: heavier rain when the ground cannot take it, heat when the crop needs water, winter without the cold that used to keep pests and disease in check.
My notebook is not a climate model, and it is not a substitute for the Wisconsin DNR’s records. It is one man’s record of standing in the same place long enough to notice that the place is no longer behaving the same way.
Aldo Leopold wrote in A Sand County Almanac about learning to see the land as a community we belong to, not as a commodity we merely own. That is the part the political argument keeps missing. A heat wave is not only a number on a chart. It is a fire season that lasts longer, a field that dries sooner, a worker who cannot safely finish a shift, a hospital that fills with people whose bodies cannot shed the heat.
Western Europe is showing the cost in the most visible way. Wildfires consume land and homes. Drought strains water supplies and agriculture. Heat-related deaths arrive through ordinary bodies: older people, outdoor workers, people without reliable cooling, and people whose lungs and hearts were already carrying more than they could afford.
The earlier European heat wave linked to well over 10,000 excess deaths was not an argument about whether people should have bought better fans. It was evidence that heat becomes deadly when it meets age, illness, poor housing, outdoor work, and public systems built for an older climate.
The bill does not arrive at the boardroom where the fuel was extracted. It arrives at the hospital, the farm, the town budget, the insurance office, and the family kitchen.
The people who bear that cost did not choose the fuel mix alone. They did not approve every drilling project, build every gas plant, write every utility rule, or decide which risks would be priced into a product and which would be left for the public to absorb. The industry collected the revenue. Families, firefighters, farm workers, hospitals, and future generations received the bill.
That is the rural contradiction I recognize. We are told to respect self-reliance while being made dependent on industries too large to answer to the towns where they operate. We are told the market will discipline bad decisions while the atmosphere receives the waste for free. We are told that ordinary people must adapt, pay more, work through greater danger, and accept disruption as the price of energy security. The companies that made the choice are described as engines of prosperity. The people living with the consequences are described as resilient.
Resilience is not a substitute for protection. It is what people are praised for when the institutions responsible for preventing harm have decided prevention costs too much.
There is a true point inside the argument against simple climate slogans: changing an energy system is difficult. Steel, cement, fertilizer, plastics, transportation, heating, and agriculture do not turn over in a weekend. Rural counties have different needs from cities. A person hauling a trailer in February cannot be handed a brochure and told every machine has the same replacement.
But difficulty is not an argument for surrender. It is an argument for doing the work honestly.
The Rural Electrification Act did not wait for private utilities to discover a profitable way to serve every farm. It used public money to build member-owned cooperatives because the market had decided rural electricity was not worth the wire. The wire was built anyway. Adams-Columbia Electric Cooperative still serves my shop because somebody before me understood that infrastructure is not only what pays fastest.
The old rural lesson is plain: build what the membership needs, keep the gains where the work happens, and do not call a cost exported onto somebody else’s land an efficiency.
The same principle applies now. Rural communities need reliable electric service, weatherized systems, efficient equipment that can actually be repaired, charging and transmission infrastructure that reaches beyond metropolitan corridors, public health warnings that reach people where they live, fire protection, water security, and conservation programs that do not turn industrial polluters into their chief beneficiaries. Workers and farmers need a place at the table before the equipment arrives, not after the lease is signed. Energy companies need to carry the costs their business creates instead of sending those costs down the road.
That is not a fantasy. It is infrastructure policy with a memory.
The fossil-fuel economy has spent decades making the atmosphere its disposal site. Western Europe is receiving the invoice. My county is receiving smaller invoices in the form of altered seasons, stressed water, and unreliable ground. Mike and Quinn will receive the balance.
The summer in Europe will pass. The fires will go out. The records will be revised when the next record arrives. The children growing up in Adams County will inherit the accumulated result, not the argument we used to avoid it. The work is to keep people alive in the climate already here while changing the machinery that keeps making it worse.
They will know whether we treated the land as a community—or as something to burn through before supper.
