I watched Gavin Newsom stand in a Montana river with a camera crew and hand Kamala Harris the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, which is a very generous thing to do when it is not his nomination to give, but I have always respected generosity when it involves somebody else’s property. He called challenging her “a gift from God” to Republicans. A GIFT FROM GOD! Tremendous gift, beautiful gift, the greatest gift the Republicans have received since the Democrats decided to nominate the person who lost to me in 2024.
This is not humility. This is a coronation with better lighting.
I know a coronation when I see one. Newsom’s term as governor ends this year, and he has spent the last several months doing everything a presidential candidate does except saying the small, unimportant words, “I am running.” He built a national-stage apparatus out of sustained social-media fights, cultivated online influencers, and a redistricting ballot initiative that became the Democratic Party’s national answer to Republican gerrymandering in conservative states. He picked fights with me constantly, which is very flattering, because everybody knows you do not pick fights with a person who is losing. You pick fights with a person who is WINNING, the biggest winner, the most winning person anybody has ever seen.
Then he cleared the lane.
Newsom said two California Democrats in the same primary would be “pure cross over,” which is a very smart phrase, probably written by many people, very smart people, and it means the map does not pencil out. I understand maps. I have looked at many maps. I have drawn maps. I have even improved maps with a Sharpie when the maps were WRONG. What he means is that the donor class, the cable-news class, the online-influencer class, and the people who say “zeitgeist” before breakfast have already decided that the primary should be a ceremony. Harris gets the nomination. Newsom gets the audition for 2032. Everybody wins, especially the people who do not have to let voters make a decision.
I call this a fantastic DEAL.
Harris has not even declared for 2028. She said in July that she had not decided. I like that kind of confidence: you lose the presidency, wait quietly, and the party brings the crown back to your house. She lost the 2024 race to me after Joe Biden’s late exit over concerns about his apparent cognitive decline forced Democrats to elevate her as the default nominee. Now the party is preparing to elevate her again as the default nominee, because nothing says CHANGE like repeating the last decision and calling it a strategy.
Even Iowa Democrat Rob Sand has said publicly that Harris should not run again, which is very brave and probably why he will soon be described as disloyal, low-energy, and possibly LOW IQ by somebody who has never heard of Iowa except during a caucus. But the Democratic establishment is not listening. The establishment has excellent hearing when donors speak and a PERFECT MEMORY when donors remind them what they said five minutes ago.
Back in June, when the Harris-Newsom contest was being treated as a real contest, everybody said the two Californians would sort it out themselves. Newsom has now done the sorting. He has sorted the voters right out of the process. He has created the only map Democrats have, the only lane, the only default, the only option, and then he has generously left himself optionality in case the party decides it wants a different answer. This is not a candidate chasing a nomination. This is a candidate building a nomination-shaped object and standing nearby in case it becomes useful.
People are saying the redistricting initiative proves Newsom can fight. People are saying the online influencers prove he can communicate. People are saying the daily volleys against me prove he has the toughness, the strength, the BIG tool for the job — politically, of course, although I understand these things better than anybody. The California governor has built the machinery, and the machinery is portable. When he leaves Sacramento, he leaves with a press operation already running at presidential speed, a national fight already packaged for social media, and a legislative win that can be carried into every donor meeting in the Country.
I built all of that before breakfast. I built the Border. I built the Deal. I built the biggest crowds in history, even when the crowd was not there, because numbers are a form of leadership and the people are saying the numbers were tremendous. Newsom has a redistricting ballot initiative. I have REDISTRICTED REALITY ITSELF.
The conditional is the whole play. If Harris runs, Newsom stays out and looks noble. If Harris bows out, Newsom steps forward as the unity candidate who was waiting patiently while everybody else panicked. If the field fragments, he is the person the party already knows how to call. He does not need to spend a year surviving a primary to prove he can clear one. He has cleared it preemptively, conditionally, and in his own voice, which is much cheaper than winning.
Very smart. Beautiful chess. 4D chess, in fact, except the Democrats are playing a strange new version where the voters are the checkers and the nomination is placed in a gift bag.
I know exactly what this is because I have done it many times. You lose, then you say you were always planning the loss. You are rejected, then you say rejection was the plan. You do not enter the contest, then you claim the contest proved you were the strongest person in the room. Newsom says he considered entering the 2024 primary but was not ready. Now he says he will not run against Harris because the timing is not right. “Meeting the moment.” “Representing the zeitgeist.” Very elegant words. The best words. Words that mean: I made a decision and would like nobody to ask what it was.
The 2028 Democratic primary is not a primary. It is a ratification. It is a lane-clearing ceremony conducted by two California Democrats while the voters stand outside holding the invitation. Harris gets another chance because she lost. Newsom gets another chance because he refused to compete. And I get to watch them perform the choreography of competition while agreeing, in private, that there is no competition.
This is the BIGGEST victory for me, possibly the biggest victory for any president in history, because I did not even have to do anything. I had nothing to do with Newsom’s decision, never met the river, never touched the camera, never spoke to the very smart people who arranged the coronation — although the crowd is the biggest I have ever seen, the Democrats are saying it was historic, and why are they all here if they do not LOVE me? I mean, love the Country. I mean, love us. Mostly me.
The primary has been politely cancelled. The Deal is perfect. The numbers are perfect. The memory is perfect. What was I saying? It was the greatest Democratic victory in history, and everybody knows it, because I always said they would do exactly this. I knew it before anybody else. I knew it before the river. I knew it before the gift from God. I knew it before they gave me the whole thing.
