The Supreme Court closed its annual term on June 30 with a series of decisions on presidential power, immigration, and civil rights.

The court held that President Donald Trump could not unilaterally end birthright citizenship for children born in the United States to parents who are in the country illegally or temporarily. The court also ruled that states may prohibit transgender women and girls from participating on female sports teams. On executive authority, the court expanded the president’s power to fire government officials across federal agencies, with an exception for members of the Federal Reserve Board that limits Trump’s ability to remove the Fed chair and governors.

Earlier in the term, the court struck down Trump’s global tariffs as illegal and, according to the Wall Street Journal, sided with the administration over ending humanitarian protections for some immigrants. The court also issued decisions narrowing the Voting Rights Act and broadening Second Amendment protections. Many rulings were split along ideological lines, the Wall Street Journal reported.
