Probe linked to news report of agent frustration with Vance travel
The Secret Service said its internal affairs division is conducting the investigation, which remains in its early stages. It remains unclear whether the review could result in disciplinary action or criminal charges.
Two sources familiar with the matter told CNN that officials had identified a person believed to have been leaking information about Vance. The employee is suspected of serving as a source for a recent MS NOW report describing frustration among members of Vance’s security detail over what they viewed as the strain created by his personal travel schedule, according to Ynetnews.
The investigation comes as the Secret Service faces heightened scrutiny over security protocols and personnel conduct. In May, the agency said a gunman fired at officers near the Washington Monument in an exchange of gunfire. The Justice Department has also pursued leak investigations involving the media, including an FBI search of a Washington Post reporter’s home in January as part of a classified documents leak probe.
The agency did not detail what, specifically, the agent was suspected of disclosing, beyond the general characterization of compromised operational and information security.
