Trump announced Israel-normalization condition day after signing
President Trump has submitted to Congress for review an agreement with Saudi Arabia aimed at bolstering the kingdom’s civilian nuclear program, a Trump administration official said. The classified document was delivered to Capitol Hill on Monday as required by the Atomic Energy Act, the official said.
A congressional aide and two others familiar with the matter separately confirmed the Monday submission. All four individuals — the administration official, the congressional aide and the two others — spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly on the classified material.
The agreement itself was signed last month in Washington by U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and his Saudi counterpart.
A day after the signing, Trump announced publicly that he was requiring Saudi Arabia to normalize relations with Israel through the Abraham Accords as part of the pact. The president’s announcement raised doubts that the agreement would come to fruition.
Trump has separately continued to insist the agreement will not move forward absent Saudi Arabia’s normalization with Israel, the administration official said.
In February, MSI reported on concerns among arms-control analysts that the proposed U.S.-Saudi nuclear cooperation agreement could permit Saudi uranium enrichment.
