An Illinois woman has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder after her 2-year-old son was found dead in the basement of the family’s suburban Chicago home on Sept. 1, prosecutors said.

Corie Walsh, 40, faces the counts in the death of Barrett, her 2-year-old son. According to court records obtained by NBC Chicago and reported by the Associated Press, Walsh was found in another part of the residence with what authorities said were self-inflicted injuries.

Prosecutors said Walsh had become “very invested” in the nationally watched murder trial of Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy and was still texting friends about the case at about 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 1. Less than four hours later, a neighbor found Barrett in the basement.

The detail about Walsh’s interest in the Massachusetts case — and the timing of her last reported exchanges about it — was among the account prosecutors outlined in court records. Walsh later told investigators she killed her son because she believed he was the “devil” and the “anti-Christ,” prosecutors said.

Walsh’s defense attorney, Andrea Lyon, told reporters that Walsh was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time of the killing and called the boy’s death “a tragedy for the entire family.”
