Putin last attended the Group of 20 summit in 2019
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday the Trump administration has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the Group of 20 leaders meeting scheduled for Dec. 14-15 at the Trump National Doral Miami resort. Rubio spoke with reporters in New York after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. “We think it’s an opportunity for him to engage not just with the president, but with other world leaders,” Rubio said, adding, “We hope that’s an invitation he’ll accept.”
Putin has not attended a G-20 leaders meeting since 2019. Earlier this year, the Kremlin said the Russian leader “may go to Miami…or he may not go, or another Russian representative may go.” The Trump administration has described the venue as the president’s Florida resort.
Trump and Putin have not met in person since their Anchorage summit in August 2025, when the two leaders talked for three hours but failed to advance a deal to end the war in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he would travel to Florida to meet Putin if the Russian leader attends the G-20, telling reporters the two leaders needed to “meet, talk, and make decisions.”
Rubio’s comments came amid a renewed diplomatic push. Earlier this month, Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Putin in Moscow before traveling to Kyiv with what Trump described as a “concrete proposal” for a peace deal.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday that Putin was ready and willing to meet with Trump but that no clear decision had been made about the details of such a meeting. “Presidents Putin and Trump do indeed always emphasize in their telephone conversations their readiness to hold another meeting over time, should the need arise,” Peskov told journalists.
Russia is one of 20 countries in the Group of 20, which represents the world’s top economies. Many European countries are also members of the G-20 and have been sharply critical of Putin since his 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
