Pezeshkian showed photos, told UNGA Iran will fight ‘until last breath’
President Donald Trump posted an image on Truth Social on Friday night showing a map in which the Strait of Hormuz was labeled “Trump Strait,” UPI reported. The post came hours after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi used the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday to propose reopening the waterway and restarting talks with the United States within seven days if certain conditions were met.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump told aides he had rejected the proposal and plans to resume attacks on Iran after the midterm elections in November.
“If certain conditions are met, the Strait of Hormuz will be open at the end of seven days, and talks will be restarted,” Araghchi told reporters in New York.
Iran’s conditions, according to CNBC reporting earlier in the week, were specified by Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei. They include: ending what Iran calls U.S. “acts of aggression,” terminating the U.S. naval blockade and economic warfare against Iran, and the release of Iranian assets.
During his UNGA remarks this week, Trump threatened to “annihilate” Iran if he was not able to make a peace deal.
“Do I drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations?” Trump said.
Pezeshkian used his UNGA address to respond to U.S. criticism of Iran. He began his speech by displaying photographs of children he said were killed by U.S. and Israeli bombs, and he blamed the United States and Israel for global instability.
“The United States president described us as terrorists. We have been the victims of terrorism,” Pezeshkian said. He told the United Nations that Iran will fight back “until our last breath.”
