FAA alerted Coast Guard around 2 a.m. Saturday of lost contact
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed Saturday that a debris field off the coast of Nantucket, Mass., came from a Gulfstream G100 aircraft registered with the tail number C-GRJP — a medical transport that had been expected to arrive at Boston Logan International Airport after taking off from Bermuda with six people aboard.
The Federal Aviation Administration notified the Coast Guard around 2 a.m. Saturday that it had lost contact with the aircraft, prompting the search, the Coast Guard said in a release.
The aircraft carried four Canadians and two Bermudian nationals, according to the Coast Guard. Search crews continued to look for the six occupants, the agency said.
The Coast Guard had searched more than 1,644 square miles in the 27 hours after the aircraft was reported overdue, with the cutter William Sparling to continue the search throughout the night, according to the release.
“Coast Guard search crews located a debris field that has been confirmed to be associated with the missing aircraft,” a release from the Coast Guard said late Saturday. “Crews are continuing to search for the six people who were aboard the aircraft and the Coast Guard cutter William Sparling will continue search efforts throughout the night.”
