Bomb squad: 80-year-old explosives pose unknown stability risks

The Austin Police Association described the Monday incident as an “unusual call” in a social media post.

The association said “a resident bought some boxes at an estate sale and, while going through them, found what appeared to be World War II-era grenades.”

Officers responded and the Austin Police Department’s bomb squad arrived on the scene.

The bomb squad confirmed the box contained live and active grenades, the association reported.

“Handling 80-year-old explosives with unknown stability is dangerous, precise work,” the Austin Police Association wrote in its post.

“Not your typical estate sale find,” the association added.

Austin police said the grenades were safely seized and removed from the scene.

The Austin Police Association’s post did not specify how many grenades were in the box, where the estate sale was held, or how the resident came to contact police.
