Ukrainian human rights activist Oleksandra Matviichuk said: “Without that protection, Russian drones will strike residential buildings, hospitals and schools like targets in a shooting gallery,” the Guardian reported in its Thursday First Thing newsletter. Ukraine’s military said Starlink — produced by Elon Musk’s SpaceX but managed by the US government — no longer works on terminals moving at speeds greater than 100mph, effectively rendering most of the strike drones Ukraine uses behind the frontlines inoperable, the Guardian reported.

The Starlink speed cap also affected the country’s best air defence system for stopping Russian jet-powered attack drones bombing Kyiv, according to the Guardian. Starlink is not required for long-range Ukrainian missions that target Russian oil refineries — strikes Trump has cited concerns about because of their impact on world energy prices, the Guardian reported.

As background, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in the same newsletter that he feels ‘betrayed’ by Trump and accused the US president of ‘picking the other side’ after more than four years of war, risking a breakdown in US-Ukraine relations.
