No fire reported and no known threat to public safety

In a statement, the FBI said it is investigating “reports that an incendiary device was thrown at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in downtown Atlanta at approximately 9:30 p.m. Oct. 20.” FBI personnel and evidence response technicians are on site collecting evidence, the agency said.

“There is no known threat to public safety at this time,” the FBI statement said. “The investigation is ongoing, and no further details are currently available.”

Police initially responded to 180 Ted Turner Drive about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and later summoned FBI and Department of Homeland Security officials to the location, according to WSB-TV. The building houses the ICE field office and an immigration court, the station reported.

Reporters from WSB-TV at the scene said evidence collected on the sidewalk included a plastic lighter and a shopping bag with what seemed to be two bottles of lighter fluid. The station also reported that no evidence indicated anything had actually caught fire.

Atlanta police blocked off the surrounding street and cleared the scene at about 1:30 a.m., according to WAGA-TV (Fox 5) in Atlanta.
