Revell said the weekend became ‘a night of fear and violence’

At a Sunday press conference, Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said police had to carry victims in their arms to get them to emergency responders because of the crowds from the football game.

Revell said, “What should have been a weekend of celebration in our community instead became a night of fear and violence for the victims and their families.” He added, “We remain committed to holding those responsible accountable and getting answers for every family impacted by this tragedy.”

The incident took place at 20:00 local time, equivalent to 01:00 Sunday GMT, close to Bragg Memorial Stadium at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, where an American football game had recently been played.

Local police said 11 people were injured by gunfire, while another person hurt an ankle while fleeing the scene. The ankle injury was included in the total of 12 people hurt, and six of the victims were children.

Police arrested Anthony Rivers III, 15, and charged him with 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a delinquent.

Police said the shooting followed an altercation among people who knew one another. In a statement, police said none of the victims appeared to have been the intended targets. Police also said additional arrests were possible.

On Sunday, police said six people were in hospital, including one in critical condition, while five had been released.

BBC News also published two separate headlines. One said a father who killed an Oregon school gunman described anguish over children he could not save. The other said two children and a pregnant woman were among 8 people shot dead at a Pennsylvania house.
