FBI found threatening posts before arrests in Georgia and California

Canton police said Tuesday that three people, including two juveniles, had been arrested in connection with an alleged plot to carry out a shooting at a high school in metro Atlanta.

The Canton Police Department said in a news release that the FBI discovered threatening posts online from one of the three suspects. The FBI worked with local police to make the arrests.

The arrests were made on Oct. 20 and Oct. 23. Canton police said two suspects were apprehended in Georgia and the third in California.

Investigators found weapons and ammunition, according to the Canton Police Department.

The three were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder.

Police said one suspect is 21 years old and another is 17. The department did not provide the third suspect’s age beyond saying the third was a juvenile.

Cherokee County School Superintendent Dr. Mary Elizabeth Davis told WSB-TV that a juvenile suspect was a former student at Cherokee High School.

Canton police said the investigation was active. The department did not describe what exactly the suspects were planning to do or how close they came to carrying out the alleged plot.

The announcement came after a 16-year-old boy killed three children and a teacher in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in central Oregon.

The Canton Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Cherokee County School District also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
