Police say gunman may have been involved in hit-and-run earlier that day

A police officer was killed and three other officers were wounded in a Thursday evening firefight in Lakewood, Colorado, with a man who was fatally shot by police, according to law enforcement. The shootout unfolded in the Denver suburb after officers responded to a call about a suspicious person attempting to get on a public bus.

Lakewood police spokesperson John Romero said at a news conference that the person may have been involved in a hit-and-run earlier that day.

Officers arrived at the bus around 6:30 p.m., and the man opened fire, Romero said. It was not clear whether the shooting happened on the bus or near it.

The three wounded officers were being treated at a hospital, and their condition had not been released.

Another person was also injured, although Romero said it was not immediately clear what caused that person’s injury.

The Lakewood Police Department is investigating the shooting and asked the public to avoid the area. The names of the officers and the suspect had not been released.

The Regional Transportation District said it is deeply concerned by the shooting.

“RTD personnel responded to the incident immediately and are fully cooperating with the Lakewood Police Department as it conducts its investigation,” the district said in a statement.
