Republicans to spotlight Democratic socialist candidates amid headwinds
The Republican midterm convention in Dallas next month will be the Donald Trump show. The president is set to appear at both nights of the event, with Vice President JD Vance delivering the keynote address on Wednesday and Trump headlining Thursday.
The unusual gathering is aimed at promoting the party’s candidates and the Trump administration’s agenda ahead of November’s midterm elections. The Republican National Convention has billed it as “a primetime showcase for President Trump’s success, candidates, and causes that have propelled the 2026 midterms to unprecedented focus.”
Throughout the event, Republicans are expected to try to paint the opposing party as radically left by highlighting Democratic socialist candidates who have been surging this year. The strategy reflects the political environment the party faces as it approaches the midterms: an unpopular president, stubbornly high prices, an unpopular war, and surging Democratic enthusiasm.
Trump first proposed the convention last year, and the Republican National Committee earlier this year amended its rules to allow for a national convention outside the four-year presidential cycle. The Democratic National Committee has not announced a comparable midterm gathering, with party officials saying they prefer to invest in local and state infrastructure.
The Dallas venue puts a direct focus on Texas, where one of the cycle’s most competitive Senate races will help determine control of the chamber in November.
As MSI previously reported, Trump announced the Dallas convention in June via Truth Social, calling the gathering “a truly Historic Event” that “has never been done before.” The keynote schedule released this week provides the lineup for the event Trump first proposed last year.
