Catering-truck decoy hides Trump from apparent Iran missile threat

President Donald Trump secretly used an alternate aircraft and was transported inside a catering truck on his return from last month's NATO summit in Ankara after American officials reportedly believed credible intelligence indicated an Iranian missile threat to Air Force One.
The operation left the media and most of the White House staff to depart on the presidential 747 as a decoy, and it took more than a month to come to light.
Trump told reporters Iran "tried twice" to kill him, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in March that "Iran tried to kill President Trump, and President Trump got the last laugh."
US law enforcement arrested Asif Merchant in July 2024 over an alleged plot to kill Trump, and Merchant was convicted in March 2026.
Iran has denied involvement in any previous plots against Trump, while threats persisted this year, including a "#KillTrump" banner carried at Khamenei's funeral the day before Trump departed Turkey.
