Iran's president tells UN Iran has been victim of US aggression

• Nesrine Malik wrote in an October 1, 2026 Guardian column that the 2026 UN General Assembly in New York left Ukraine, Iran, Palestine and Sudan unresolved and showed international law in retreat.
• Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told the assembly that Iran has been the victim of US terrorism and aggression and would defend itself with the "utmost strength," after President Donald Trump threatened to "annihilate" Iran, the column reported.
• The sole US delegation representative in the room walked out during Pezeshkian's address, Malik wrote.
• Jordan's King Abdullah II said the Israeli government's sense of impunity "has reached terrifying levels," and Benjamin Netanyahu became the only ICC-indicted leader to address the assembly, according to the column.
• Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and 80 other Palestinian officials were denied visas to attend for a second time under Trump, and the head of Sudan's government and armed forces was also denied, Malik reported.
• The United Arab Emirates addressed the assembly on Sudanese peace while its leaders are accused of arming and funding Sudan's Rapid Support Forces, and no censure came from the US or the UK, the column said.
