Senate’s top GOP super PAC pulls $71m from North Carolina ads

President Donald Trump is traveling to Greenville, North Carolina, to stump for Republican Senate nominee Michael Whatley in a race The Guardian described as “an uphill battle,” given that former Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper has consistently led Whatley in public polling for the open seat. The North Carolina stop is the second in a seven-day campaign blitz through states Trump won in 2024, with the midterms now just two weeks away. Guardian reporter Shrai Popat framed the tour as intended “to drum up support for Republican candidates on the ballot ahead of the midterms.”

Earlier this month, the Senate’s top GOP super PAC announced it was pulling a $71 million ad spend in North Carolina in order to funnel more money into the Kansas Senate race — a move The Guardian characterized as “a sign that Republicans’ hopes to hold on to the Tar Heel state might be dwindling.” On Monday, Trump rallied in Kansas as the Senate competition there becomes increasingly tight.
