Florida Department of Environmental Protection to investigate and dispose of cylinder

An unidentified cylinder that washed ashore on a Flagler County, Florida beach during the weekend was removed by a hazardous materials team. Flagler County Fire Rescue personnel called in the St. Johns County Fire Rescue Hazardous Materials Team after the cylinder was found amid nor’easter conditions, and the St. Johns County team secured the object.

The handling of the cylinder fell to the St. Johns County crew. The team removed the object from the shoreline and secured it, and the team said the cylinder will be turned over to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for further investigation and disposal.

Under the plan described, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection will receive the cylinder and handle both its investigation and its disposal.

The cylinder washed ashore during storms, amid nor’easter conditions, and the response was carried out over the weekend by county personnel and a county hazardous materials unit.

Neither Flagler County Fire Rescue nor the St. Johns County hazardous materials team offered any potential identification for the cylinder, and neither speculated about its origins.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection will receive the cylinder for further investigation and disposal. For now, the cylinder that washed ashore in Flagler County is off the beach, secured and set for transfer to a state agency, with its identity and its origin unestablished.
