FDNY reached the Sunset Park row house in under four minutes

A wooden row house in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, was burning early Thursday morning when more than 200 firefighters and paramedics responded. The fire killed six people and injured seven others, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said. The six who died were adults.

Emergency responders found four people dead when they arrived and rescued four people. Two of the rescued people later died at a hospital, raising the death toll to six.

“This was a devastating fire,” Mamdani said. “It will take a long time for this neighborhood to mourn the neighbors they lost this morning.”

Mamdani gave seven as the total number injured. The casualty breakdown listed four civilians, three firefighters and two police officers among the injured, though those categories did not match the reported total.

New York City Fire Department firefighters arrived less than four minutes after the 911 call around 2 a.m., according to FDNY Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods. Firefighters encountered fire on every floor and blowing out every window.

Authorities said it took about three hours to bring the blaze under control.

Investigators had not determined what caused the Sunset Park fire. A hazardous-material crew was on the scene because of the presence of a lithium-ion battery.

In a separate incident last week, a lithium-ion battery from an e-bike sparked a fire on the 11th floor of a Bronx residential tower. That fire killed four people, including an 11-year-old child.
