Destatis revises August gain down to 1.0% as factory orders also jump

German industrial production rose 0.7% month-on-month in September, Germany’s statistics body Destatis said Friday, defying expectations of a decline.

Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had projected that output would fall 0.2% for the month.

Destatis also revised its August figure downward, to a 1.0% rise.

The figures put German industrial output higher in both of the past two months.

The September gain came despite high energy prices driven by the war in Iran, which continue to pile pressure on companies, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The Journal reported that the rise adds to tentative signs of a recovery in the industrial sector despite continuing energy-price headwinds.

New factory orders also jumped in September, the report said.

Purchasing managers’ surveys of manufacturers for October showed a further rise in activity, though at a slower pace, according to the Journal.
