The Guardian published a 25th-anniversary retrospective on September 11, 2026, gathering historians, former officials and a victim's widow to assess the consequences of the US response to the 2001 attacks.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed on September 11, 2001, when 19 al-Qaida hijackers seized four airliners, slamming two into the World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon and one into a field in western Pennsylvania.
The US invaded Afghanistan in late 2001 and Iraq in 2003; the Guardian reported that the Iraq war was launched on the false premise that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction and that "hundreds of thousands of lives" were lost across both wars.
