Hamilton’s victory brings Kansas its first Democratic senator since 1932
The Guardian reported that Adam Hamilton clinched Kansas’s U.S. Senate seat in the 2026 midterms, becoming the state’s first Democrat to represent it in the chamber since 1932. Hamilton defeated Republican incumbent Roger Marshall, who had held the seat since 2021, giving Democrats a senator as they sought to regain control of the chamber.
The Guardian reported that Kansas had emerged as an unexpected battleground in the 2026 midterms and that the closely watched Cook Political Report rated the race a toss-up. The Guardian reported that the Cook Political Report noted Kansas was one of several agriculture-heavy areas hit hard by high fuel and fertilizer prices and linked those pressures to what The Guardian described as Donald Trump’s ‘war on Iran’.
According to The Guardian, Republican incumbent Roger Marshall, 66, had represented Kansas in the Senate since 2021 after two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Guardian also described Democratic pastor Adam Hamilton, 62, as leading the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, the largest United Methodist congregation in the country, based in the Kansas City area. Hamilton calls himself an ‘independent-minded Democrat’ and had argued that Kansas would benefit from having one U.S. senator from each party.
Marshall’s work as an obstetrician factored heavily into his reelection campaign after The New York Times reported that he had sued hundreds of his patients for unpaid bills, including dozens who were arrested after missing their court dates.
The Guardian said Marshall’s medical-billing lawsuits and Hamilton’s pragmatic bipartisan appeal helped tighten the race. The Guardian also reported that Donald Trump had won Kansas by 16 points in 2024.
The Guardian reported that Donald Trump rallied in Kansas in late October in hopes of inspiring Republican voters to turn out for Marshall.
During the campaign, Hamilton told voters that he would be more accessible to them than Marshall had been in office. Marshall had last held an open town hall with his constituents in early 2025 and left after facing pointed questions. He said the town halls became ‘non-productive and dangerous’.
The state’s other Senate seat is held by Republican Jerry Moran. The Guardian noted that it is not unheard of for Kansas to elect Democrats to statewide roles. Outgoing Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly has held the governorship since 2019.
